Vae files are for adding small modifications to color and composition to the generated image. Usually making a better result when used. They can also help with bad hands and eyes sometimes, but that's not always guaranteed.
Really, there are currently only a handful of unique vaes that get used. But they are renamed by the author of the model before redistribution. If you have the options listed below, you don't need to download any other vae files when downloading new models.
Increasingly, vaes come 'baked' into the model. But selecting one of your own will overwrite that baked in vae.
Here are some examples of the different vaes, used on different models. Note some of them may have baked in vaes, which is why some of the 'No Vae' examples look more saturated than the 'Anything.vae' examples.
The vaes widely in use are,
Commonly called anything.vae, which was originally NAI.vae It is used mostly for non-realistic images (anime, paintings, cartoons, etc.), but can be used on realistic images too. Colors are much less saturated than the other options.
This vae can also cause images to become solid black when generated. Usually at larger resolutions.

Commonly called anime.vae, is used pretty much exclusively for anime. Can distort realistic images. More saturated than NAI.vae, but slightly less than mse.vae Download link: https://pub-060d7c8cf5e64af8b884ebb86d34de1a.r2.dev/models/vae/kl-f8-anime2.vae.ckpt
Commonly known as mse.vae, yields great results in most cases, especially with photo realistic images. Very saturated colors.

This vae is designed to have cooler colors than other options. Is more in focus than anything.vae, but less saturated and vibrant than mse.vae This is a good alternative to anything.vae if that one is causing errors, or you don't like the vibrancy of mse.vae and anime.vae
Works well on a wide variety of models

Very similar to anything.vae but slightly more vibrant and in focus.
This vae can also cause images to become solid black when generated. Usually at larger resolutions.

There are also the predecessors of the anime2.vae and mse.vae. They aren't really as good as their newer options, but may be interesting to try out.
Predecessor to kl-f8-anime2.vae, which is most likely the better option. Listed here mainly to offer all the discovered choices.

To install them, simply add them into a folder specifically called "Vae", located in your model weights folder.
After placing the files in this location they will show up in the drop-down box in app, no restart required.
